Lately I’ve been entirely addictive to Duelyst with it now being basically the only game I’m actively playing. It has the usually daily quests that keeps you coming back for the Gold, plus a free card each day now. The free card used to be part of this rather fun challenge mechanic where you completed a puzzle to kill the enemy commander in a day but it seems they ran out of ideas.
There is also a repeatable 3 game quest that can be done as many times as you want to earn gold if that’s your thing too. Just doing the basics each day pretty much earns you a free card pack and in that respect it feels far more generous than the other online CCGs out there. It’s even nice they just count games played rather than wins for these as it means everyone has an equal chance at progressing.
For this month my main goal was making it to rank ten, the Gold league. A not insignificant quest as it seems it’s in the minority of players but after, I think 50ish hames I broke through which is above the average but considering I haven’t got an optimised deck yet I think it’s rather good for my first month of real play.
I stuck with the Abyssal deck with lilithe as the commander and based my deck around the swarm style. It’s funny how my preference seems to always sway towards this kind of play, lots of disposable enemies to overwhelm, vet out of all those this one is definitely my favourite.
Lots of smaller minibuses you summon that upon death add to your army. The death watch mechanic and a lot of card play around it. The bloodborne sister that spawns more creeps upon any minions death. The… That damages the enemy general while healing yourself, and then that grows with each death. There are a lot of ways to capitalise on the disposable nature of your critters which is fun. It also has a lot of options for removal.
Here’s what I’m playing around with lately.
The other decks are kinda fun too with magmar and going face, Ventruvian and its structures that continuously spawn mobs each turn, and Lionar and a more tank and spank style deck. In terms of mechanics all rather fun but it is rather surprising how different each feel because of both the race specific cards and how each General seemingly changed up your playstyles.
This is also why I’m enjoying it a lot more than the other online CCGs as it often isn’t just a simple value analysis of attack and hit points as the mechanics around the minions you pick, and how they form a cohesive strategy is far more important. These elements can turn minimal threats into game changers, and completely turn the tide of the battle when played well.
I rather like the monetisation of Duelyst too, and this is another big reason why I’ve continued to play and support the game. For some reason I feel like it isn’t as crippling in terms of play compared to the other CCGs. First because the basic decks it gives you are actually palmetto decent and can be played to a rather high level. I’ve been mucking around with a few if them in gold league and winning a fair few. Second is that the obvious power creep between expansions hasn’t occurred yet, but more because I think they’re doing an ok job of avoiding it so far. Basic vanilla cards are still used white often in the meta. Third is how generous they have been with being able to earn currency and free orbs, but also the cards they give you for making a certain rank.
And lastly is their payment started around the expansions, since they’ve made it so you only need to purchase a certain amount of orbs before getting the complete set. It ensures it only gives you what you have yet to acquire until the maximum so you aren’t wasting time and money into he process. Personally I bought this recent expansion, bloodborne up front for a good price so I could have them, place $20 on regular orbs. My luck for legendaries has been shocking but at least I have the recent expansion.
There are lockboxes which is a bit annoying, and they do keep shoving them in your face by acquiring them through play but not giving you the keys to open them. It is only cosmetics though with emotes and player portraits so it isn’t game affecting. The recent Boss Arena (have footage of the boss battle I’ll put up on youtube soon) that has you attacking a boss with new minions, mechanics and strategy has a lockbox as the reward too, yet locked behind a $6 paywall which is a bit rich considering it contains cards and a legendary and it has a time limit as well. You can get the same thing with gold and it could be a discount compared to the others but, as with most items purchased digitally, the amount of value is incredibly subjective. Ehh.. I don’t mind supporting companies and games who aren’t entirely greedy.
and some gauntlet gameplay to round off the post. I make a lot of mistakes, and my deck construction is still a little off from what I can see but I ended up doing pretty well.
