The announcement was a few days ago now but it’s worth iterating how pumped I am for the Morrowind Expansion for Elder Scrolls Online. I have been playing a fair bit of eso lately and slowly but surely becoming more enamoured with it. I feel like the combat is starting to click a little better and I have fallen into a rather nice daily pattern I enjoy.
Anyway here’s the announcement
So far the biggest (non)reveal was the new zone Vvardenfell. I am not sure about the lore really since I’ve never really bothered getting that much into Elder Scroos game but Understand it to be important since it’s the setting of one of the single player games. Looks a bit like the burning Embers style of End game zone that I rather love but from the screenshots there does seem to bit a lot more variability in the setting of the zone than usual.
New starting area which might be nice – even though I nearly always skip that phase.
The other big bullet point was a new class which is a pretty big deal for, I think everyone. Eso hasn’t gotten a new class, or even playstyle since release and I’m sure many of the vets are a little bored with the current selection. Should shake up the meta a little which is always good to see too – as long as it settles in a reasonable balanced fashion.
Over at massively they collated a bit of information that might have been missed in the stream too, with the statement that the Warden will be able to fulfill all three roles. It’s nice that they are saying this outright since in the current meta quite a few of the roles just don’t work that well on some of the classes so, at worse we might get another comparable end game healer and tank.
I like the nature focus of the magic, and apparent frost for tanking. The pet DPS line welllll…. I’m skeptical. The Ai for pets is known to be an abomination right now with terrible pathing, bugs, aggro mechanics, lack of commands, and how much damage they take from the mountains of aoe. They are mostly just not worth having in group content right now and I don’t see that changing too much unless they really work on it.
Battlegrounds are on the way as well with three game types to choose from. The basics I’m guessing: Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, and a deathmatch style. The Three way battleground style might be rather fun though – chaotic but in a good way and allow for different tactics than we usually see in battlegrounds to surface. I don’t see it taking too much of the attention away form the alliance wars but it prove a decent distraction for many, and a place to hone one’s skills and build for the hardcore.
And of course – a new 12 man trial called the Halls of Fabrication. I rather hate those dwarven critters though – they really grind my gears….
I’m also rather happy to hear they aren’t adding any considerable power creep to the game with this expansion. It sounds like they don’t plan to add and more champion levels or an extra tier of gear but more adding to the scope of what’s already available. I hope they can keep with that style of horizontal progression as I’m rather burnt out on climbing that gear treadmill.
What I did find rather interesting was there talk around the Morrowind expansion as a chapter – and often referring to it as a plural which means we may be getting more expansion size, and priced additions in the future. Does this mean the DLC updates may also cease now though? It was rather nice seeing those semi-regular meaty little additions pop up now and then as they added some nice new mechanics and ways of playing. They are what really seemed to open up the ESO experience whereas Expansions seem to often just deliver more of the same – if not a lot of it.
It also makes you think about their proclaimed payment model – stating something like the subscription will give you access to all new downloaded content. Granted an expansion is a rather different thing but looking at the feature list so far it is comparable to some of the current DLC, if a little more in scope. Are they changing the game once again?
Ad of course a quick update that Housing is hitting the game after today’s maintenance, should be pretty cool to get into that at last.
