There is this line Free to Play games usually try to skirt the line of convenience and quality of life with everything they do. Constantly tip-toeing back and forth to see what works, what doesn’t and what they can get away with. Often I”m not even sure what would be called convenience either or something that is required, and what conveniences means changes over time, in each game and from person to person. I see this line constantly being crossed lately in more invasive but insidious ways. ways that can often be downplayed as not as serious, forgettable or the place of the ignorant and quickly corrected like it was never intentionally. But, know well that these are not accidents and more the work of well planned and organised tests of player willpower and interests.
And this brings me to blade and soul, the latest to fuck up in ways that have obviously been planned yet set themselves to profit from. I’m talking of course about their premium membership and priority queuing. Right now Blade and Soul is getting the usual mmo treatment of insane interest at release and this is some of the worst I’ve seen so far. People waiting dozens of hours to get in to play, and being locked out and also a few systems that aren’t working which eject players from the game to start again.
But oh wait, what’s this – you can pay to skip that drama by paying and get into the game just about straight away. I’m sorry but they can shove this solution up their well oiled corporate assholes. I think at this stage this was what they planned all along as no release could have been this incompetent. The complete lack of servers, the low count of players able to be on them, and of course the terrible service and connection to the game servers. Yet they have system already in place, that works well and immediately to bypass this. I’m not that stupid, and sincerely hop the rest of the playerbase isn’t as well.
So the question now is, if you can’t actually play the game without paying is it still considered free to play. It will be in a month but right now, with the current interest and such in the most important time of an mmo’s lifecycle it’s not even that fremium crap of getting in first and hitting the paywall. They want that wallet open from the start – which is probably a good decision for them considering the crap they are trying to shovel anyway.
It’s funny at the start that all the Pr pandering was going on about it all just being convenience, only selling convenience and I guess in some twisted corporate parallel universe being able to play the game could be considered a convenience but here, on planet earth it’s idiotic. Unfortunately this is one of those things we often believe is fair, that those who are paying should probably get a better service so I have no doubt that there will be people using and defended this new low in cash shop shenanigans. To me, an actually service would have been, oh I don’t know… maybe creating and running a decent fucking service in the first place. Providing enough servers to meet a reasonable demand and with the way technology has improved around server structure and architecture I don’t think that’s an unreasonable thing to ask.
Add to that the fact that you won’t be able to use the wardrobe system properly without subbing and well – here’s my message to you NCsoft
