The closer the expansion for Elder Scrolls Online gets, the more I seem to be getting interested in the MMO once more. I left on a disappointing note when I last played. I was rather hyped for the game but for reasons even now I’m not sure of it just didn’t grab me. Part of it was the veteran ranks, another part the quest grind, and a bit more the combat just not feeling quite right but none of those tell the whole story.
Over the year and some now and has seen a wealth of updates that fix many of these issues and also just added a whole lot of content but none of that ever seemed to tempt me. Now, with the Imperial City update fast approaching I see that changing a little.
There are quite a few interesting facets to it but most importantly it is a PvP focused update. Having played, enjoyed but found the AvA little lacking it’s an area of the game I’ve been watching for updates. It needed something more there to keep interest, provide more goals to people and provide alternative styles of play and this is what the Imperial city might be providing.
There is a few large new areas to explore, with their own dungeons and public spaces but the one I’m most interested in are the sewers underneath. A mixed PvE and PvP public dungeon space. I’ve always enjoyed that kind of content; fighting through mobs with a group while remaining apprehensive the whole time whether around that next corner will be another group. A group to compete with or attack. It’s an amazing experience and this sounds well designed to highlight that conflict.
One interesting mechanic is the addition of the Tel Var stones. These will be gained in much of the new content, dropped from mobs and within dungeons and a resource used to gain some of the new gear. In the PvP sewer space these stones you are carrying will be lootable on death too. This will create some great fights and adding an extra reward, and way to progress through PvP. It will definitely add a lot of extra excitement to encounters within that space as well with the potential loss, and gain of these stones.
And then there is the Arena space as well which I haven’t read too much about just yet regarding how it will function. An arena for fighting monsters under the watchful, and delighted eye of the Daedra but also a pvp space too. Should be fun.
It seems like they are refining the various campaigns now as well. Different pvp campaigns each with a specific ruleset that encourages certain types of players and gameplay. It’s a great approach and once again improves upon the options available to players.
I’ve seen a lot of changes to the amount, and time required for veteran ranks which is a great approach as well. It is a mechanic in my mind that served as both a needlessness restriction to playing with others and also something that unbalanced the pvp. Those with higher ranks already have an advantage and yet they also have access to better gear. It was silly and while it is still around, and with 2 new ranks (grrrr) it might be easier to catch up now. The champion point stuff as well though – well that’s just making things worse. One step forward, two back.
Overall the Imperial City DLC looks like a needed, and well designed addition to the game and I’m looking forward to it. Enough that I’ve started that huge download.
Oh yeh… and it’s getting housing in the future. That’s all they really needed to say
