I hate dumb races. Now that isn’t some random rant against poorly designed and realised mmo races, there are enough of those that I probably wouldn’t stop ranting. No, I mean the actual races that are intentionally designed to be perceived as simple and unintelligent.
I see this racial trope a lot in mmo’s. The need to fulfill some kind of checklist is apparent in a lot of them and of course, one of the first items in that list is a non playable race of questionable intellectual ability. GW2 had those Quaggans. Wildstar the Lopp. Final Fantasy 14 the Moogles.
I hate them… I hate them all.
A big part of that is a find it incredibly condescending. The broken English in a way is making light, and making fun of people whose primary language isn’t English. I’ve worked, and do work with people who have English as a second or third language and while they make mistakes I know they are working extremely hard and are probably far more intelligent than me to get that far.
It tends to make fun of certain psychological and medical conditions as well. Many people have learning disabilities that slur speech and make language challenging. Certain physical and psychological issues present this way as well. It’s not funny. It’s not cute. It’s not something to make light of. I’ve met and talked with many people in this position. They are amazing people and yes, when people make jokes about it that they hear (because yes they are still aware) and it hurts – emotionally.
Next is that in many cases it’s just a lazy stereotype trying to make fun of whatever “savages'” they’ve deemed hilarious enough at the time. The Lopp is one of the worst and blatant example of that Asian stereotype I’ve seen in a while. It is an exact rip-off of that language style, then exaggerated and embellished. It’s a comedic style that was barely funny a decade ago and that I thought was viewed with disdain now – apparently not if you dress it up with a small bunny aesthetic.
Most of all is that’s it’s just fucking lazy. The dial in approach to create a cute, lovable race that most seem to eat up with a spoon. The easy way to showcase a race that is different from the average humanoid but there are so many other ways to achieve that. There is a whole range of geographical styles to go with, both from the present and the past but creation shouldn’t just stop at the aesthetic and basic facade. Their should be more their that allows you to understand evolution of the physical and the social. The workings of economy, creation and communication. Just something else but haha, fucking shiny.
I know I’m being a little over-sensitive about it but it’s just one of those design decisions that even without the baggage has always annoyed me. I have enjoyed it in certain games, at times but mostly it is a racial design that creates a huge barrier between me and possibly liking and wanting to learn more about a race and world.
