Long time no post here on the blog and yes, I’m still kicking and mucking around with games and such but lately my focus has changed quite dramatically.
Still playing the indie games I love and all that but just not as much. The YouTube stuff is a thing but I am thinking of changing my focus away from let’s plays to more, reviews and impressions pieces, with the occasional straight gameplay thing. Maybe a let’s play if I really love it but otherwise… Meh.
On the gaming front well, my time is taken up with a lot of Dungeons and dragons now. Yep, my nerd metamorphosis is complete I guess. I had played a little in school, as well as some cyberpunk but since then I haven’t touched a pen and paper game. Now I’ve always been interested but I guess that interest only really overtook lately due to watching copious amounts of Critical role. The stories they uncover and the encounters they have a truly amazing, emotion and exciting – and what’s even more amazing is the often improvised nature of it. Sure I understand that I am unlikely to experience anything as amazing as that due to them being actually voice actors and having played for years but – that interest is there and I have enjoyed it.
It started about 2 months ago for me now with a pathfinder game I’ve been playing through IRL with a few other people. It’s an odd group, and one that’s seen a bit of turnover but something that made me realise it’s probably something I will enjoy. Not sure how long that group will last now but anyway.. It was a good introduction.
This lead to me actually wanting to craft my own campaign as well and it has been a rather nice creative hobby. Building a world with people and lore. Various characters I rather enjoy like a bubbly old Mage, who suffers from a little ptsd, an evil gnome set for revenge and burning the world around them and so many others. It comes alive within you, so alive at times that it’s hard to really relay all that information.
I have various towns made up, a world born of a purpose and one wracked by elemental invasions. I have great evils biding their time within building power, and the human alliances pushing back at times. It honestly feels like a novels worth of information at times but on in which is being designed to be played, to be adaptive to the input of others. It’s interesting.
I have recently reprised this world too for my first time as a Dungeon Master and running a mobster campaign. One front the side of evil, or so we think about them but you see have their own goals, issues, and problems to deal with. It’s been fun creating different systems for that different style of campaign too as some things didn’t make sense.
Instead of money there’s a reputation system for the monster clans. Help out, give them items and materials they want and they’ll provide help, services or goods in return. Had a funny wtf moment with my players when an npcs alchemist has just offered them two potions to just, you know take. I didn’t tell then that’s it for a week though but still rather funny.
Building a monster campaign has been even more amusing too with coming up with funny eccentric npcs such as a goblin undertaker obsessed with gaining teeth (or teef) and will give the player certain goods for them. Eventually gaining you admittance to his deity, a bone demon within the mountains above. They just have more character, and more room to be extra creative.
Last weekend I also ended up DM to a group of women newbies. Three of the four having never played before and while I thought it was just going to be helping out to answer a few questions regarding mechanics and such, but ended up me running them through the first part of Lost Mines of Phandalin and possibly the rest as they seemed rather enthused about it. So, just after 2 months of starting to play Dnd I’m now playing in one game and DM’ing two others. Just a little intense but it’s been fun so far and it seems like those I am running the game for are having a good time.
Well that’s what I have been, and am doing right now and I may just really a little more of the information about the world, characters and such and what else I’m doing from now on too. There will still be various other video game things as well, and I have a couple pieces so that part won’t be stopping just hopefully more of a balance in the future and – more regular posting once again.
