Early access is the modern cancer of games industry. That used to be free to play monetization methods in my mind but lately that thought has changed. While they remain an issue ftp is more an assault on the sense, something that activates the gag reflex and makes you wretch into the air a few times before pushing on. People of course differ in how dull their senses may be from simple skittles dripping from the mouth to a large pool of vomit for the particular heinous elements.
And welcome to the Illustrious MMO awards by the goddess of ranting and raving although instead of celebrating the amazing parts of multiplayer this year it’s time to fulfill my sarcastic urges and delve into Monetization hell. The pits of MMO malaise and have a little fun while we’re at it.
So here we go
I’m going to be brutally honest here and say that Hero’s Song looks like shit. It looked like shit the first time we saw the ideas on kickstarter and it still looks shit now.
I’ve been regularly checking up on kickstarter game projects for some time now, many years and have an eye for finding new indie games. Especially pixel style aesthetic and have seen a lot come and go. Unfortunately there is very little that Hero’s Song seemingly does better than them, or makes it unique in the vast sea of retro style games attempting to be hardcore. It’s not new or innovative: just tired, boring and pathetic.
I don’t often like to dwell on the doom and gloom style posts that some companies and sites like to put up declaring the mmo apocalypse. We know that’s not going to happen in the near future, or even ever. Often enough it isn’t even about an actual event or information piece but more because the people writing it just dislike or misunderstand the medium. I’ve ranted against that kind of thing numerous times but here, when it comes to the current Free to Play fraud infecting the industry it’s news that erupts sounds like trumpets and angels singing.
And it looks like the next Chinese Cash shop… I mean mmo is coming to the west peddling their pretty but unsatisfying experiences once more. Revelation Online, the new pretty yet pale imitation of a virtual world. This is your official warning.. don’t do it. This is not the mmo you are looking for.
Hot on the heels of a post saying I shouldn’t complain about these things I thought FUCK IT, I’m gonna damn well complain more about these things. Because these issues are important, these issues affect gameplay and enjoyment, and these issues are the worst… THE WORSSSTTTT!! And fuck it.. I’m going to have a whole week where I complain about this shit now too.
